Background: Urinary incontinence significantly affects patients' quality of life worldwide and poses a substantial global economic burden. Stress urinary incontinence is characterized by sudden involuntary leakage of urine during activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure, such as exertion, sneezing, coughing, laughing, or straining. Transperineal ultrasound provides a noninvasive, dynamic, and objective assessment of pelvic floor anatomy and bladder neck mobility.
Objective: To review stress urinary incontinence, the role of transperineal ultrasound in assessing bladder neck hypermobility, and laparoscopic Burch colposuspension as a surgical treatment option.
Conclusion: Transperineal ultrasound provides objective information about bladder neck mobility and can be used in the peri-operative assessment of stress urinary incontinence. Burch colposuspension remains an effective long-term surgical option, while the laparoscopic approach provides the additional benefits associated with minimally invasive surgery.
